Alberta Pronghorn Connectivity Project

Alberta Pronghorn Connectivity Project

Over half of Alberta’s pronghorn migrate seasonally, often crossing provincial and international borders. Migratory individuals—especially those moving during harsh winters—have higher survival rates than resident pronghorn.

Background

  • 55% of Alberta pronghorn are migratory vs 45% that are residents
  • Pronghorn move between provinces and across the Canada-USA border
  • Seasonally migratory animals and ones that migrate during extreme winter storms have higher survival than normal non-migratory animals

Primary Objective

  • Assess connectivity for pronghorn given current and proposed changes to Alberta’s landscape

Project Needs

  • Capture and GPS collar 50 pronghorn
  • Cost per pronghorn: ~$4500 CAD (capture & collar)

Origins Foundation Fundraising Goal

  • $45,000 CAD (10 collar/captures)

This project was funded through the generous donation by the DSC Foundation.
